Happy or Unhappy

Happy or Unhappy

So what mood are you in today? Are you the glass is half full person or the glass is half empty person? Are you happy or unhappy?

It's a choice that you are in control of. Think about it, you woke up this morning and for some reason you think that nothing is going right and you focus on this and you are in a bad mood. The kids are not getting dressed, you haven't had your coffee, you need to pack the lunches.

What is going on?

Maybe you didn't sleep well, maybe you just did not want to get up when the alarm went off because your bed is nice and cozy and warm. Maybe it's everyone else fault, and that's another topic for another blog post.

Have you ever had this type of a morning, I'm sure you have and it's not pretty or funny. Or maybe this is your normal morning. I know what it's like I've been there many times.

Now the question is who was it that made you "feel" this way? Did your spouse shake you in the bed and tell you, "you are going to be unhappy today". Of course they didn't, you are in control of your own mind, correct? Yes you are, you're making all sorts of conscious decisions, you are a star. Well now for some self doubt, maybe you didn't consciously decide to act this way, maybe your unconscious mind has a part to play in it.

That's right, it's your unconscious mind that is actually making most of the automated decisions, like walking for example. You are not consciously thinking left foot forward, balance, right foot forward. It's your autopilot, you trained or programed your unconscious mind to do this, it was forming a habit. Just like your morning routine of chaos, running late, shouting, screaming. That is your new habit and that is the way adults consciously learn which is different from early childhood where the unconscious mind is mostly where you are absorbing information, after all children are sponges.

So what are you going to do about it? Change your morning habit. Wouldn't it be better to get out of bed earlier and feel energized and HAPPY, of course it would.

There are several "small changes" that you can try and even just one at a time, or one day at a time.

  1. Get out of bed one hour earlier
  2. Prepare your lunches the night before
  3. Practice gratitude
  4. Practice a short mindfulness meditation session
  5. Practice daily affirmations
  6. Stop for a minute take a few deep breaths and just tell yourself that its better to be happy than unhappy, keep that thought with you and be aware of any mood changes
